Australia’s answer to Britney Spears?

Elen Levon, a 16 year old from Bondi, has taken the Australian ARIA charts by storm, with her debut single “naughty girl” hitting #5 on its release.

Schoolgirl by day, performer at night, Elen has been able to balance the two efficiently, earning her a record signing with ministry of sound as well as a support act form 50cent, LMFAO, Black Eyed Peas and many more..

Her song Naughty girl, has the right formula to ensure that its no one hit wonder. People have already been comparing her to the next Britney, with her dance moves singing and musical talent, however this may be difficult for her to live up to, with Britney selling over 100million records world wide.

Australia has a lot of home grown pop stars, but rarely do we ever get somebody who actually has what it takes to make it on an international level. Elen is one of those rare few — She has the looks, talent, youth, and edge to become a star anywhere.

Rising to prominence after her successful single ‘Hometown Glory’(2007), Adele has quickly gained fans of her endearing music. Following the commercially successful album ‘19’, ‘21’ did not fail to top the charts, with singles like ‘Someone Like You’ and ‘Rolling in the Deep’. Moreover, Adele’s videos approximately hold an outstanding view count of 700 million views (Youtube).

The Hometown Glory singer has never been more relevant, with her audience ranging from the normal listeners, to the metal heads, to music geeks, to the indie and the hipsters. That’s saying something. Adele’s soulful music caters for nearly everyone who has an auditory ability by inevitably touching their emotional spots. Perhaps the current music meta is tired of the same electronically engineered music that have been inhabiting the scene for quite some time now, and let’s face it: Not every track that we hear today is unique.

Perhaps it is the musical genius that Adele pours into each song that she performs, or the brilliant and enigmatic poetry that her words possess that bewitches listeners of a wide category. Her enchanting voice delivers the audience to submit to their inner selves and reflect upon the personal existence and relevance of love and loss. Adele’s music is at the slightest sense, an opium for the masses. Someone whom people can empathise with. Someone who can voice out the words that most people can’t, or still mustering the courage to do so. Someone who can relate to the unspoken obstacles that people inevitably tread upon day by day. Someone who understands. Someone like her.

Ain’t no more barbie girl…..

Aqua is back! From their first hit barbie girl hit stores in 1997, it was sure that this band was going to stick around for a while and make more hits targeted to the younger generation. However this was not the case, having not made the charts untill 2011 with the of their first single “Viva Las Vegas” from their new album “Megalomania”.

This electro-pop dance beat has received positive reviews from its critics, with some citing the premature comeback of the infamous barbie group band! In my perspective, this song does have potential for some radio playback, however i am very sceptical to how successful they will be with their other music once their album gets released due to the high frequency of similar songs from other more well known artists such as David Guetta and Pitbull. All in all, this song is still a great tune to listen to, especially the intro.

“Austin City Limits Music Festival “

Nothing like going to a hot an humid 36 degree day in the blazing sun listening to your favourite tunes from artists such as Coldplay, Foster the People, Kanye West, Cut Copy and many more acts spanned over a 3 day period.

It also included the usual mix of niche indie acts suddenly thrust onto giant stages, not to mention the festival-goers making their own unlikely bids for attention via ridiculous headgear and handcrafted flags to get away from the humid weather which was from a continuing 4 month drought.

The 10th Anniversary of the festival was something for the record books, hitting average crowds of 15000 throughout the 3 days. From someone living on the other side of the world, it was unfortunate that i could not attend :(. They did provide a live YouTube stream as a consolation. Here is a clip of Pumped up Kicks. One of the highlights from the festival in my opinion :)

The long anticipated return of Lil Wayne is finally over with the release of a new banging track with B.O.B for his up comming album

The first single for B.O.B’s new album “Strange Clouds” has received positive feedback from the music industry, with expectations to climb the billboard charts upon its official release on October 3.

With Dr. Luke providing the beat, its nothing but a great formula for success, with past compilations such as Airplanes and Nothing on You speaking for itself. Now tie-ing into that formula Weezy and his “gangsta-esque” persona, it will surely hit number one in no time.

Tunesyoullrelateto presents: 40 Steps (The Academy Is…)

Rock/”emo” Chicago-based band The Academy Is… have called it quits after a 8 year career. In the 8 years the band have stuck together, they’ve released three studio albums. Almost There provided listeners with a taste of an ‘emo,’ ‘gutsy’ attitude with a more classic twist on rock that differed from their peers. Second studio LP release, Santi, saw the band change direction ever so slightly, with the help of a new lineup and producer Butch Walker. ‘40 Steps’ is a B-side off Santi, which brought The Academy Is… into margins of mainstream success. While its follow-up record, Fast Times at Barrington High, delivered more pop-rock sensibility, it was obvious to see that another slight change in musical path may have divided the band for good. And with that, The Academy Is…no longer.

‘40 Steps’ is one of those tracks that adds yet another dimension to an artist you love. As to how this didn’t make the actual album, we will never know, but this is arguably one of the band’s most musically intriguing, emotionally raw and extremely superior songs. The busy sounds of the electric guitar make it hard to believe the simplicity of the instrumentation. The quality expressed through William Beckett’s voice is an exact reflection of the words he reveals. Almost Smashing Pumpkins-esque, this track draws on all the strengths of Beckett, guitarist Michael Guy Chislett and drummer The Butcher. For me, this track pulled The Academy Is… out of the pool of ‘typical’ Fueled By Ramen bands and hurled them into a new light. This song alone is worth an 8 year career.

The Black Keys Wanna Sell You A Van

It’s been a big year for the Black Keys since the release of their 6^th studio album Brothers. Since the release of Brothers, the Ohio rock duo have climbed to dizzying heights – earning the boys Billboard Music award nominations, four Grammy nominations (two of which they won), and an awkward yet hilarious MTV Video awards trophy (see - ‘Tighten Up’ by The Black Eyed Peas). But with the hype of Brothers slowly winding down, a little more than 12 months since its release, The Black Keys have announced the release of their follow-up album, El Camino.

In the same vain as the Brothers release, the boys have released what looks like a collaboration video with the ever-popular ‘Funny or Die’ to promote the up-coming album. Along with the video, a faux website was set up to try and sell the ‘El Camino’ van featured in the clip (Contact Pat or Dan if interested on (330) 510-1206). A day later, The Black Keys released the album artwork, along with the track listing.

I, for one, am excited to see if the boys can top Brothers, which was arguably my favourite album of 2010. It’ll be hard, but no doubt these guys can deliver. We’ll find out on October 26^th, when the first single and first track ‘Lonely Boy’ is released. Check out the track listing below:

Tunesyoullrelateto presents: Spotlight (Birdy)

Birdy is one of the youngest singers who is starting to make a mark in the modern music scene. Singing both originals and covers alike, Birdy is beginning to gain avid listeners of her soulful music.

Birdy delivers each song with honesty and pureness, accompanying herself with a piano and her own vocal instrument; a simplistic but intricate weave of a flurry of pleasantness that will surely captivate your hearts. Her cover of Bon Iver’s ‘Skinny Love’ showed a rather fragile and melancholy version of the song, making it more reachable to audiences of a lighter inclination towards music. But before we judge her of shallow thoughts, one should know that Birdy is also capable of writing endearing music that is equally, if not more captivating than her covers. Her original song entitled “Without a Word” shows vivid key work that certainly accentuated the fullness of the tone of her voice.

Birdy is perhaps one of the most underrated artists that our generation have seen due to the status quo of the modern music scene. But it is surely noted that people who happen to find her music will be able to relate even at the slightest sense; something that the current electro-music meta is lacking. It is then safe to say that her much awaited self-titled album due to be released on the 7th of November 2011 is worth picking up if one is trying to break different from the electro meta and delve into the original sound of musical genius, simplicity, and tradition.

Lineup Review: Summer 2012

Ok so it’s a little hard to review the future…but it is possible to anticipate it with a little excitement. Although it’s hard to believe in this temperamental weather, summer is just around the corner. And with festival season kicking in the new years, it will be a hot summer at that. In recent weeks, numerous festival lineups for summer of 2012 have been drip-fed to us (ever so cruelly, mind you) and now there poses the question – which ones are worth it? Looking at 4 diverse Australian festivals let me pick at my own brain to give y’all my personal verdict.

Future Music Festival 2012

Future’s 2011 gave me feelings of love/hate. Which is always the case for festivals in general. It’s always - should I stay and pre-drink my wallet empty, or make it in time to watch Ke$ha vomit glitter? Should I wait in line for this ridiculously overpriced kebab, or try and sneak off and catch the whole MGMT set in all its glory? 2012’s Future Music Festival lineup may set you up with some more difficult questions as there are bound to be some heavy clashes. While I’m not particularly a dance music fan, there are some acts that definitely catch my eye – Jessie J, The Wombats, The Naked and Famous, Die Artwoord just to name a few.

Soundwave Festival 2012

Ahh yes, every post-punk/heavy-metal/90’s rock fan’s dream. I’m always taken aback at the diversity of acts that Soundwave bring out every year, in particular the headliners. The 2012 lineup, however, will rope in a lot of fans, even those who swore to never return after the failed ‘Soundwave Revolution’. My picks: JACK’S MANNEQUIN, Cobra Starship, Dashboard Confessional, The Cab, Four Year Strong, Hole, etc etc. So it’s a pretty good lineup. Not to mention, Saves The Day are playing two sets – one being Weezer’s ‘Pinkerton’ album in full. Why don’t they just bring Weezer out instead…then I’ll be sold.

Big Day Out 2012

NOW for the Big one. Big Day Out has been the biggest Australian festival ever, bringing a great array of artists from all different genres down under for some summer lovin’. While 2011’s Big Day Out was majorly spoilt for me by the Black Keys pulling out (still not forgiven, boys), I can guarantee 2012’s lineup will surely make up for it. From the headliners alone, it’s obvious to see how big this one will be. I for one will definitely be seeing: Kanye West, Foster the People, Best Coast, Odd Future, Boy and Bear, the Jezabels…please, stop me from naming the whole lineup announced so far.

Laneway Festival 2012

Laneway Festival is the smallest festival of the four, but this doesn’t mean it’s any less giving. 2012’s lineup is jam-packed with amazing artists, with a lot of the bigger artists being of the female variety. With the artists they’re pulling, it’s only a matter of time before Laneway becomes more than just a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it festival to the untrained eye. My definite picks are: Feist, Laura Marling, Anna Calvi, Girls, The Panics, Portugal. The Man, Cults and you’re starting to see my point.

Verdict

Big Day Out and Laneway are my personal picks for the summer. Both so different in style, audience, and general aesthetics, they’re offering the freshest acts of the year (and next year too) and are bound to create some buzz amongst festival and music fans alike!

Tunesyoullrelateto presents: Florence + the Machine’s Shake It Out (music track review)

Florence Welch is back with a brand new track that proves as haunting, ‘anthemic’ and scarily catchy as anything. The video ‘Shake It Out’ delivers what anyone fan would expect from Florence + the Machine– eccentric but appropriate dance moves, flowing frocks, forest scenes, references to death and all things eerie. But a MIDDLE PART? And…is that a LADY SUIT? Welch’s style aside, this is the coolest masquerade scene I’ve seen since that one time on Gossip Girl. The Venetian style masks and actors, almost Vaudeville style, work well with the theme of regret, mysterious evils of the night before…you get where I’m going with this. Lovely crafted video, slight girl crush on the dresses, keen for the new album. Nothing new though
